His work bridges applied science, policy and field practice, underpinned by advanced degrees in aquatic ecology and a current doctorate in veterinary medicine, focusing on improving the welfare of farmed Nile tilapia during harvest.
In 2021, he founded Ethical Seafood Research, a pioneering non-profit advancing animal welfare in the aquatic foods sectors through practical, evidence-based solutions. His work has supported leading institutions including the United Nations, European Parliament, UK and Canadian governments, WorldFish, WWF, and the Aquaculture Stewardship Council.
Wasseem’s projects span Europe, North America, Africa, and the Middle East, where he is originally from. He brings a rare combination of scientific rigour, policy fluency and grassroots insight, championing a future where aquatic food production respects the sentience of animals and supports sustainable, ethical food systems.
